Extend your athletic stamina by many folds

Submitted by : likehealth //

I will not talked about the details of my life and how I like and learn to swim. I will be assuming that you already know how to swim. But this blog is for those that seem to have a hard time extending their distance in swimming. Such as :

1. Can't even finish swimming a lap ( 50 meters ).
2. After swimming a lap ( 50 meters ) you have to do bubbles or breathing to catch your breath.
3. After swimming a lap you continue to the second lap immediately and gets too tired to reach the end of the second lap.
4. After doing 6 to to 8 lapses with in-between bubbles or breathing you can't continue anymore because of exhaustion.

These are what I still experience after 25 years of swimming, when I was about 35 years old but I still continued swimming in a weekly ( once a week ) routine. Until I included honey in my daily diet. You may have heard a lot of featured stories, topics, health news, blogs etc. praising how honey is full of vitamins, minerals and all the other good things what your body can benefit from this product, which is virtually true. A few months after I started taking honey every morning about a tablespoon, I tried swimming continuously ( after a lap I swam the next lap ) for 10 laps then bubbles and swam the next 10 laps. At first I am still catching my breath but after a few weeks I've noticed that I am not getting weak that much. Until a friend told me that I can do it much longer distance, its just a matter of muscle conditioning he said. So I can swim the 20 laps for about 2 hours which includes socializing while swimming. Another friend introduced to me the paddles, it is used to strenghten the swimming stroke and I liked it. It divides the time of my swimming into half.

Presently, or as of this writing, I am now doing 40 laps ( 2 kms ) without stops with paddles in just about an hour and doing it twice a week. Which is not bad, because I've talked to a friend who just joined a beginners triathlon race and he said the swimming event is a 2 kms swim in 45 mins at max to stay on the race. Considering my age, distance and time to finish within race standards I feel that it is already an accomplishment for me.

Also, to maintain all the honey's beneficial nutrients, never subject it to temperatures higher than our body's temperature, that is about 40 degrees centigrade. Remember, whenever ever a person has a fever, his temperature is closely monitored and is not allowed to exceed 40 degrees or else possible convulsion might sets in. Honey is sensitive just like our cells, exceeding a certain temperature destroys them.

Hope this short article gave some important pointers.

2017 National Science and Technology Week

 DOST - NSTW

Submitted by : Mr. Stantz //

The exhibit runs from July 11 ~ 15, 2017 at The World Trade Center at Buendia Ave. I went to DOST about 3pm, got lost in riding the jeep. I thought the World Trade is at EDSA but it was at Gil Puyat( Buendia). As I arrived there, I didn't know that the exhibit will be up to 5pm only. So I just mingled with some of the student exhibitors that explain their experiment or maybe their science projects in application. I choose booths that interests me, usually any that will benefit me in many ways.

Here are some of the photos from the exhibit

World Trade Center Manila

First encountered booth

Harnessing electrical energy from wastewater which is pretty abundant in our country, since most of our waterways are heavily polluted. The student uses freshwater wastewater which according to him composed of mud, animal feces, trash and basically everything. But after sieving the big trash, what was left was murky dirty water. Together in conjuction with potassium dichromate and with some electrical positive and negative wires and connection will produce a measly 26 miliVolt of elecricity. Yes, you may say its very small, but if you connect it in series you will produce a higher voltage.
It works in the principle of the bacteria in the dirty water, which when dipped with a graphite rod will produce electrons. While the other liquid with graphite rod the potassium dichromate is what they call electron acceptor. Thus when connected to a load makes a close circuit, or electrons circulate which means there is electricity.

The purpose of this project is to introduce or show that there is electricity in wastewater. But further studies was not made anymore.

Second booth

Alternate antibiotic against a virus that causes cystic fibrosis through accurate targeting of these virus through the use of infrared light. The student explains that applying this alternative antibiotic targets only this virus. While the infrared light will target this alternative antibiotic thus killing the virus. This alternate antibiotic is man-made or sunthesized by man.

The purpose of this project is the alternate drug against the traditional antibiotic which in their experiment they use ciprofloxacin ( known as a very powerful antibiotic )  as comparison.

Third booth

There are a lot of products in this booth, like a drone with a camera but with propriety apps capable of videoing ( I think ) with the purpose of studying a plantation or a field for research and development. But I what caught up my attention is utilizing palm or coconut tree leaves and converting them into planks of wood. For years, it was one of those things that how can we get a substitute for wood. Man has taken advantage of the forests and their trees - denuding them, polluting them ( chemicals from mining). The only plywood alternative I see is the fiberboard or cement reinforced board and harnessing the sawdust from woodworks we produce particle board. But they are far from the properties of true wood which are machinability, pliability and strength. But this wood plank from leaves is a breakthrough.

De Lasalle booth

Fourth booth

My fourth encounter made me ask for more. The booth is De Lasalle's, there is one that demontrates a nanocoating applied to a glass for heat deflection. Another is the propagation of algae in large quantities for food supplements production. But the third one where I used up almost all of my remaining time there. A professor is explaining how they discovered a special insect ( can't remember the name, its scientific, sorry prof. ) that targets only the "cocolisap" a kind of pest that destroyed 85% of the coconut trees of southern Luzon. I've heard it on the radio where coconut tress are devastated by this pests in a matter of months sometimes weeks. And the government did not solve this problem. A coconut tree when planted will takes 7 years to see them fruiting. That's why I was saddened when I heard the news on the radio. But according to this professor from La Salle from Laguna, the pest are now almost gone, except to some part of the province like Basilan where travelling there is questionable. As the professor is explaining in detail the process of how this insect kills the pests, I felt a sense of relief and happiness. And followed-up some more questions in a blissful excitement.

I guess this exhibit is presenting what they have achieved in the field of destructive pest control. Kudos to the prof. ( sorry again, did not got his name ) but he knows who I am talking about.

Aside from its taste, combination of meat and vegetables are its price. Perfect for an ordinary lunch coming out from the office.

Neighbor's noisy dog ? Irritated ? Can't sleep ?

Submitted by : jack trade //

Can't get a good night's sleep every night with your neighbor's barking dog ? Want to stop them from barking ? Sometimes you want to poison ( God forbids ) them just to solve the problem or just shoot them dead ( God forbids it also ) ? Did it ever entered your mind to feed these dogs laced with sleeping pills ? Here in our country, where a neighbor can have noisy dogs and still get away with it. Because either they are local officials or have a relative of the local officials, in short they are "malakas" or well connected with the authorities. I can't understand why there are careless people, people that don't care if they are giving other people inconveniences. If you file a case for disturbance in the local level, you will be spending your precious time to a unimportant matter. Either it will be heard on deaf ears or the case will be dragged for so long you will not have the intention to continue, but sometimes it can be resolve.

Let me make it clear that I am not endorsing any brand or product, just plain solution to a problem. I have found a humane and safe way to stop or at least reduced significantly the constant barking of dogs. I discovered a cheap but effective device from the internet to counter this barking dogs at day or at night.

As you can see, this is a battery operated Anti-bark device

Aside from its effectiveness, my only problem with it is its very costly for me since I have to turn it on at night and shut it off the next morning. With one 9-volt battery, you can use this device for three consecutive nights. One cheap 9-volt battery will costs you 25.00 pesos. So to solve this problem since I have a few understanding in electronics, I converted it to work on dc adapters.

Improvised to work on dc adapters

As you can see, I am not that irritated with our neighbor's nightly barking annoying DOGS. Yes, they are more than one. Aside from my front neighbor, there are many more other neighbor's barking dogs at day and night. And yes, I seem to be residing in the middle of a dog zoo.

Two units to maximize effectiveness

You might want to know how this device works ?
The device has a built-in microphone and speaker. When the device hears the barking of the dog it will activate a sound.  We humans can hear frequencies 20 hertz to 20 kilohertz, we can't hear below and above the range of the mentioned frequencies. But pets like dogs can hear from *67 hertz to 45 kilohertz, while this device emits a 25 kilohertz short ringing sound that attracts the dog's attention much like patting a dog to stop when they bark. At 25 kilohertz only dogs can hear the emitted sound. But an indicator light ( red ) indicates that the device picks-up the barking then it will activate the short ringing sound. So, it is a sound activated anti-bark device.

Powered by dc adapter anti bark device

I have also seen a similar device but it is powered  by a dc adapter. And its downside is you have to add additional extension cables to power the device. I haven't tried this device for effectivenes as I just ordered it online. Will update this blog for further news.

Artificial honey ?

Submitted by : Mr. Stantz //

We are all aware of fake honey that are usually sold in streets and small markets. But did you know that there are also fake honey sold in leading supermarkets. Beware of artificial honey that is distributed in these big supermarkets. As one can see in the picture, the word “Honey” is in bold and the phrase “flavored syrup” is not bold and small in font, so you will not notice it. They used “flavored syrup” to avoid using “artificial” in their label.
